Working in Columbia

What we see on Columbia roofs

Several of Columbia’s older areas are listed on the National Register, including the Columbia West End Historic District along West Seventh Street between Frierson Street and the old railroad line, with Greek Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne houses on the same street as the James K. Polk Home. For homes inside the city’s local historic districts, roofing and roof structure changes are among the exterior alterations reviewed by the Historic Zoning Commission, and the city will not issue a building permit there without an approved Certificate of Appropriateness. We supply material specifications and photos for that application and plan the install around the review.

Beyond the old core, Columbia’s neighborhoods span many decades. Pleasant Hills on the east side and Bel Air near Hatcher Lane and Trotwood Avenue are established neighborhoods of mid century homes. Graymere Manor in the southwest grew up around the 1924 Graymere Country Club. Valley West, beside Maury County Park, dates to the early 1990s, and Bear Creek Overlook is one of the newer communities on the northeast edge.

The higher ridges of the Highland Rim rise to the south and west of the city, and elevated, hillside streets like West Columbia Hills can take more wind than lower lots. The drive from Murfreesboro takes a little over an hour by Interstate 840, Interstate 65, and Bear Creek Pike, so we book Columbia work in blocks and confirm dates when you call.

Common needs

What Columbia homeowners usually call about

Historic district approvals

For homes in a local historic district, we put together product specifications, color choices, and photos for your Certificate of Appropriateness. Tear off begins after the commission signs off.

Mid century east side

Mid century houses in Pleasant Hills and Bel Air may have been reroofed more than once. We count layers and check the decking before recommending a shingle or metal system.

Hillside wind exposure

Elevated streets west of downtown can take more wind than lots near the Duck River. We pay close attention to ridge caps, edges, and flashing on those roofs.

Good questions

Questions from Columbia

How do I know if my Columbia home needs historic review before a new roof?

Ask the city planning office whether your address is in a local historic district. If it is, roofing changes are reviewed by the Historic Zoning Commission, and a permit cannot be issued without its Certificate of Appropriateness. We provide product details and photos for that application.

Do you inspect storm damage in Columbia?

Yes. After hail or high wind in Columbia we inspect, photograph, and give you a written summary you can keep or share with your insurer. Read our guide to storm damage and insurance claims before you file anything.
